What is common between Amitabh Bachchan, Sunil Dutt, King Zalrid of Abu Dhabi, cartoonist R K laxman, and politician Mrs Prabha Rao? The common link between these celebrities is that they were all treated by Dr. S S Vengsarkar.

A recipient of several international awards, Dr. Vengsarkar was born on May 08, 1941. He completed his graduation (MBBS) from K. E. M. Hospital, Mumbai, Maharashtra, in October 1963. He earned his Masters degree (MS) from the same institution in October 1966.

He became an Asst.Honorary Professor at LTMG, Sion, Mumbai in October1969. Recognizing his talents and relentless efforts, he was elevated to the post of Honorary Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in 1973. Later on, he headed the Orthopaedic Department (HOD) from 1980 to 1987.

He completed a century cases of Ant. Surgery for TB Spine in 1970, and in the same year he read paper at IOA, Trivandrum. From 1971, he started scoliosis surgery with Harrington instrument & post Spinal Fusion.

He visited Wrightington Hospital and acclimatized Hip Replacement surgery in 1976, and the same year he became British Council fellow and worked with Robert Owen.

In 1977, he conducted his first case of Hip Replacement, wherein the patient is still alright without need for revision. A number of Charnley Hip Replacements were done at Bhatia Hospital in 1979.

With a credit of over 3,000 Hip Replacements surgeries, he has been guiding two M. S. students per year for the past 18 years at LTMG. He is also the M. S. Orthopaedics Examiner. He is also given the responsibility of DNB-examiner for Mumbai, Pune, Shivaji, Chennai and Manipal Universities. He has been on the editorial board of TBISC since two years.

The country recognized his efforts by bestowing upon him the Best surgery award of IMA and Giants Best Doctor Award in 1993, when Mr. P.V . Narshimha Rao was the Prime Minister.

His current interest is in Joint surgeries. He is frequently invited to national and overseas meetings and seminars on Joint Replacement Surgery as guest lecturer. He has also been invited to demonstrate live surgery in various parts of India and the sub-continent. Dr Vengsarkar regularly attends conferences, both national and international, to keep himself updated so as to provide world-class care to his patients. Very active in research also, he has presented and published over 50 papers in reputed journals and conferences.
